Ekkamai: Thai Set Lunches & Teh Time Treats

Image
Plaza Batai's bastion of Thai cooking is bringing out a wave of new specialities that could keep us lingering here from noon till long past sunset: An expanded selection of set lunches that offer delicious value starting at RM22.90++, Teh Time treats that'll tickle the fancy for Thai sweets, and fresh modern recipes for its a la carte menu (Thai tacos, anyone?). Click above to watch our special video on Ekkamai and interview with its head chef Awee. With more than two decades of professional experience, taking her from her homeland to London to KL, Ekkamai's head chef Awee is one of the most skilled Thai chefs working in Malaysia - it's no surprise though that many customers might not recognise her name, since she's an unassuming talent with no thirst for the limelight, preferring to let her work speak for itself. Running in both Plaza Batai and Publika, Ekkamai's weekday set lunches currently number a lucky 13, extensive enough that you can eat here in the afte...

Nourish, Damansara Heights

Image
On a sunny Saturday, slightly past noon, Nourish feels like the happiest place in Damansara Heights: The brunch crowd is feasting on everything from corn bread to crispy falafels to buckwheat pancakes, while Hall & Oates' You Make My Dreams flutters from the speakers, followed by The Beatles' Love Me Do. The restaurant's bakers have been up since 5:30 a.m., and the results of their labour are on vibrant display, with pecan pies, banana bread, carrot cakes and egg tarts lining the counter. Nourish marks a spin-off by the team behind Kenny Hills Bakers, taking up the challenge of a full-fledged eatery that embraces a diversity of ingredient-driven recipes, living up to its name with a passionate reliance on produce like organic eggs, grass-fed beef and fresh vegetables and herbs, with cakes that shun gluten (diverging here from Kenny Hills Bakers) and refined sugar. Salads and warm meals surface from the kitchen starting 11 a.m. everyday; customers can choose two types of...

Mamacina, DC Mall

Image
By EDKL Writer A.A. Turning up the heat in DC Mall, Mamacina exudes a sultry sizzle, spanning the seductive vibes that throb through its pulse-quickening setting to the sensuous vibrancy of its kitchen's smouldering creations (think oxtail bakar, flamed flank steaks, charred broccolini and more). The presence of Mamacina permeates this restaurant and bar, illustrated by portraits that channel her life and passions. The curious character, rocking round-rimmed sunglasses at night, might be fictional, but her vivacious spirit is well and real here - immaculately coiffed, she may have travelled far and wide, but she always comes home, bringing back international influences like Italian artwork and French Champagne to complement her own Asian heritage, underscored by a wall strikingly filled with maneki-neko fortune cats. True to that border-crossing philosophy, Mamacina's menu is impressively eclectic, with inspirations that leap from continent to continent without breaking a sweat...
