Lawn Garden Cafe, Cheras

Image
Flowers and leaves offer fertile inspiration for Lawn Garden Cafe’s recipes - the Lei Cha Pasta fuses Chinese and Italian traditions, featuring bigoli whole wheat pasta tossed in a mild ground tea sauce that's the Hakka equivalent of pesto, its earthy nuances bolstered by plenty of fresh vegetables (RM18.90). Also nutritionally sensible: Blue rice, naturally tinted with butterfly pea flower, rounded out with juicy, almond-showered grilled chicken and more fibre-rich veggies with a vivid crunch (RM16.90). Tea makes a final encore in the cafe’s star dessert, a milky-frosty ice-blended paired with a potent punch of matcha. Meanwhile, fruits shine in rejuvenating chocolate and caffeine-based beverages - bananas are blended into an irresistibly creamy chocolate shake with a pinch of salt (RM14), while a splash of lemonade spikes up the cold-brewed coffee (RM9.90). These drinks are chilled, but service is warm.    Lawn Garden Cafe C-73-UG, Jalan C180/1, Dataran C180, 43200 Batu 9 Ch...

Dumpling devotees, draw your chopsticks: The handcrafted jiaozi here come packed with prawns, pork and chives, steamed to order, served warm and tender (up to RM16 per plate, depending on the choice of stuffing). Communication might be problematic for some of us though; when we visited, there was no English-language menu or English-speaking crew member. Mama Jiaozi Guan 86D, Jalan Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Chye Seng Foo Coffee Shop, Cheras

Image
Fans of hearty comfort in hot bowls will find soulful heaps of rice and noodles to sustain them at this welcoming new Cheras cafe, reputedly adapted from recipes by one of its co-founders’ Grandma, thrust into modern times with a few Japanese twists. Marinated pork meatballs, crisp to the bite and succulent to the chew, form the highlight of the steamed Japanese rice sweetened with juicy lychees and pineapples, enlivened with crunchy onions and cucumbers, rounded out with a fried egg for flowing creaminess (RM15). Egg noodles promise a premium firmness, packed with tender chunks of mildly curried chicken, plus the fluttery lightness of bonito flakes, for a satisfying meal that bears both savoury and sweet subtleties (RM15). Desserts are determinedly more contemporary-cafe than classic-kopitiam, but even Por Por would probably approve of these pretty-on-plate pleasures. The matcha chiffon cake (RM14) is perfect for patrons who prefer less-sugary treats, prepared with pure Shizuoka match...
