Sunday Coffee & Cakes, Taman Bukit Indah

Image
Sunday Coffee & Cakes can make every day feel better, courtesy of its cheerful crew and comforting baked fare. Start with a Japanese-style sando, thickly stuffed with crumbed tamagoyaki and house-made mayo with hints of wasabi (RM18), for the tastiest egg sandwich this side of OUG. The cheese terrine cake is our best bet for the cakes component, softly sumptuous (RM12), but the matcha madeleine's a solid contender too, a pound cake-textured hybrid of Japanese and French sensibilities. Sunday Coffee & Cakes 14, Jalan Selera 1, Taman Bukit Indah, 58200 Kuala Lumpur. Daily, 9am-6pm. This post first appeared on eatdrinkkl.com

Hong Kee Coffee, 176 Avenue Bangsar

Image
Tucked inside Bangsar's 176 Avenue hair and beauty parlour, Hong Kee Coffee is a caffeine bar run by a husband-and-wife team, Malaysian fashion buyer-turned-barista Hong and Hong Kong-born Freesia, turning their romance for coffee into a fresh-blooming affair with fellow latte lovers. Even if you're not here for a haircut, hop by Hong Kee for a bold-bodied flat white, currently relying on a locally roasted Guatemalan-Indian blend (RM10), or a Yuzu Soda, fruity and fizzy, a reviving perk-me-up for humid afternoons, brightened with Hong Kee's own-cultivated mint leaves (RM10).  Hong Kee Coffee 176 Avenue, 176, Jalan Maarof, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 1030am-6pm. This feature first appeared on  eatdrinkkl.com Check out the new Eat Drink KL official Facebook & Instagram pages. RAGE, Bangsar

Image
Flat whites fused with oat, coconut or soy milk, matcha matched with sweet palm sugar or sour plums: Unconventional couplings are all the rage at Bangsar's new cafe for busy bees and social butterflies seeking a space for both work and play. Caffeine cravers won't rage against the (espresso) machine here: Lattes and cappuccinos are currently capped at RM8 each, diversified beyond dairy with at least three choices of alternative milk - oat brings a smooth lusciousness with cereal-flavoured subtleties to your cup, while coconut feels a little lighter in texture but is more distinctively aromatic, without tasting too tropical. There's soy milk too, with other possibilities (nutty ones like almond, hazelnut or macadamia?) expected eventually. RAGE's speciality coffee concoctions (RM10) beckon us to cool down, keeping tempers and temperatures in check with a Milo-spresso Dino (shaken, not stirred; creamy, not cloying), Espresso-Cado Shake (best paired with the Avo On Toast p...

What's On Tap, Mont Kiara

Image
This sleek new cafe brings the 'Modbar' minimalist design aesthetic to Mont Kiara, serving coffee out of chrome taps, concealing espresso machines under the counter to ease the sense of separation between baristas and their customers. The configuration might evoke beer on tap, but what flows out of these workstations are the building blocks for long blacks and flat whites. The house blend for espresso-based beverages will likely change weekly, with the current blend comprising Brazilian, Colombian and Guatemalan varietals. Black coffee starts at RM6 for 30ml, coffee with milk at RM11 for an 8oz cup. The Italian-manufactured Modbar system is also efficiently applied to automated pour-over processes (RM14 for an Ethiopian Heirloom filter) for smooth, light-bodied sipping. Prices are reasonable considering the costliness of this programmable system. While the set-up might seem sterile for some, the service crew exudes enough warmth to make What's On Tap feel welcoming.
